Books:

The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality - A document written for parents by the Pontifical Council for the Family.  This document outlines the moral principles and Catholic truths which enable parents to teach their children about sexual love.

On Certain Questions Concerning Sexual Ethics - Dr. Lickona refers to this document when he points out the "widespread confusion of minds and relaxation of morals to which the Church cannot remain indifferent."  Parents will find here a clear restatement of the Church's teaching on moral issues, including prematial relations, masturbation, and homosexuality.

Letter to Families From John Paul II - This tender letter written by Pope John Paul II is wonderfully readable and inspiring.  The Holy Father shows us that the love of God is reflected in the love of a man and a woman united in marriage.  He teaches us that the demanding character of married love is the very thing which builds up the true good of husband and wife, and allows this love to radiate to others.

Of Human Life (Humanae Vitae) - This brief encyclical addresses "the most serious duty of transmitting human life, for which married persons are the free and responsible collaborators of God the Creator...."  It reminds us that the love between parents reveals its true nobility "when it is considered in its supreme origin, God, who is love."  It describes true marital love as fully human (of the spirit and the senses), total (friendship in which spouses share everything selflessly), faithful until death, and fruitful (open to life).  It further reminds us that the fruit of the sacrifice required by married love is serenity and peace, though sometimes accompanied by difficulties and distress.

The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World (Familiaris Consortio) - This encyclical by Pope John Paul II is filled with teaching for everyday family life.  Just as a short passage of Scripture can nourish us deeply, so a brief paragraph of this encyclical can deepen our understanding of the "very beautiful but very hard" vocation of marriage.  An especially practical teaching is that one on family prayer (n.59): "Joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments, births and birthday celebrations, wedding anniversaries of the parents, departures, separations and homecomings, important and far-reaching decisions, the death of those who are dear, etc... should be seen as suitable moments for thanksgiving, for petition, for trusting abandonment of the family into the hands of their common Father in heaven."

Talking to Youth About Sexuality: A Parents’ Guide - by Mike Aquilina - This is a book which provides parents with answers to serious questions of the Junior High and High School age son or daughter - in accord with teaching as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Where Do Babies Come From? The Mystery of the Gift - by Lisa Lickona - Inspired by John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, Where Do Babies Come From?, for ages 9-12, puts sex in the context of the story of  the creation of man and woman - made for God’s love, made to give of themselves.

The Wonderful Way that Babies are Made - by Larry Christenson - provides a way for parents to share with their children the profound beauty and meaning of human sexuality and to discover it for themselves anew.  This is a book for a young child, bold print gives words to the parent of a little one, while fine print provides a way of describing the wonderful way parents cooperate with God to create a new life.  A parent should read the book and examine the pictures to determine what is appropriate for an individual child.

"It is more and more clear that, today, parents are faced with situations where they have to defend the family, marriage, purity before marriage- things we think that others would understand and value. What is being taught in schools is absolutely contrary to what we believe.

It is crucial, even for well-educated parents, to study and to be prepared to teach their own children about sexuality." Sally Wallace, founder of the Catholic Parents Program
